CONFIRMATION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

St. Stephen's Confirmation Classes

We invite you to consider joining us in Preparation for Confirmation. Preparation for the sacrament of confirmation at St. Stephen's is open to all baptized persons 8th grade and up.  Our preparation program begins during the month of February, and continues through early June, when candidates are confirmed at Grace Cathedral.

Confirmation is the sacrament whereby individuals, particularly those who were baptized as infants, are given the opportunity to claim for themselves the promises made on their behalf at baptism.  It is also the rite by which the church community recognizes a young person as an adult member of Christ's Church.

Participation in classes, retreats, and liturgies is absolutely crucial for those considering confirmation. We believe that young people deserve to have adequate preparation and information regarding big life decisions...and the decision to accept the responsibilities of full adult membership in Christ's Church is a big decision!  For this reason, the participants in each confirmation class covenant with one another, making a mutual commitment to attend and support one another in all the events required in preparation for confirmation.

Furthermore, we believe that faith is not a private affair... faith comes to maturity when it is nurtured in the context of a family as well as a faith community. We are all on a life-long faith journey. For that reason, we require parents of potential confirmands to attend their own "adult faith commitment" class concurrent with the youth confirmation class.  We also require that each potential confirmand select a sponsor, a confirmed member of the Christian Church (perhaps an older youth or young adult in the congregation, or a close family friend) who will support them in this important leg of their faith journey. Sponsors must be available to attend a few key events in the confirmation process.

Contact the Reverend Jim Ward at jimward@ststephenschurch.org or (415) 435-4501 for more information, or to register for our next confirmation classes.

People:

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Celebrant   Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
